Lucia Larenas Mahn

Born in Concepción in 1976, I grew up in Chuquicamata, a mining camp located in northern Chile.

Graduated in Fine Arts with a specialty in painting at the School of Fine Arts in Viña del Mar.

About me

Trained in Fine Arts with a specialty in painting at the School of Fine Arts in Viña del Mar. I began in the arts in my childhood, with my mother, who taught me the rudiments of painting. Later, I was fortunate to meet and learn more with the talented and sensitive artist Deyarina Maldonado, today a dear friend. The School of Fine Arts in Viña del Mar taught me the techniques and rigor of the discipline, added to the culture of the arts. Later, I studied at the Hernán Valdovinos Academy, with whom I learned the science of color in drawing and also to discover, accept and explore my own thematic and creative current.

I completed postgraduate studies in "Psicoplástica Arts from the Catholic University of Chile when I had the opportunity to live in Santiago in 2015, which marks a milestone because after that training, my personal vision and work in the arts became a search and a channel of communication with the world of the production of my images, understanding the creative processes in the manner proposed in this regard from psychoplastic arts, that is, from the perspective introduced by the research and thought of Carl Gustav Jung. When approaching the visual arts from this vision, the most important to me are the deep appeals of sensitivity and consciousness, the reading of the image, the questioning of the image, its connections between my soul, my mind and the world, without leaving aside my appreciation of beauty as a glimpse of the divine. It may seem very personal, self-centered, but the truth is that they are common issues deep within every human being, that is to say, they are universal. With this aesthetic sensitivity I contemplate nature as if it were a book that can be read, full of signs that most of the time I cannot even articulate in words. I see the spiritual force of the living that shows us the breath of creative power that is linked to everything and between everything, like a fabric, everything overwhelmed (sometimes with chaos) by a nature that floods and penetrates everything, generating liberating cracks and openings, paths, labyrinths and the guiding presence of light.

Through the use of these symbolic images and compositional resources, I seek to shape my perception of beauty and the meaning of my life. Thus, I can hardly separate what I paint from my own reflective process or my life. They become maps that reveal my journey and I “crystallize” them in painting, drawing, engravings, and intervened objects. On the other hand, linked to literature, I have worked on illustrations for books, some covers, and in 2020 I published my book “Rex-corriendo Chuquicamata”, which has given me the opportunity to share with the community of the mining camp where I grew up.
