Oil painting on canvas
Most of my creative output is through the medium of painting (including prints, collages, objects etc.). Each piece is developed over a fairly long period of time. That time is like the ripening of a fruit: first there is the plant or tree, then its twigs, leaves and flowers. The mystery of pollination lies in that open flower, a restlessness that calls for a response. Initially the fruit is very small. It begins to be nourished and grows until it is ripe and ready to leave the tree. That is the image in the mind, a cerebral representation of what is to come.
I often use quotes from authors I admire for their approach to the human soul and the arts. This quote from Meister Eckart (1260-1328) helps me to introduce my paintings: “Before my eye can see the painting on the wall, it must filter through the air, and in an even more tenuous form, enter my fantasy (the imaginal) to be assimilated by my understanding” (Sermons, 111). The wall he refers to is present in my mind, this is where the image is first projected and then the process begins. The eye works like a mirror. I paint images that are not external landscapes, but totally of the interior. I believe all human beings have that interiority and so I become intertwined with the fabric of humanity’s interiority.
